How to fix mdadm / mdraid resync=PENDING or auto-read-only?

I installed wheezy on a couple of new drives, setup for software RAID1, and when I checked the status I showed resync=pending and read-only.

cat /proc/mdstat

I thought that it might start sync with a reboot, or perhaps after a period of time, but you can force and kickoff the resync with:

mdadm --readwrite /dev/mdN

Worked for me.
